Our Compass

As Mother’s Day has passed and Father’s Day approaches, I am reminded of both blood-related as well as spiritual-related nurturers in my life. I could spend hours thinking of stories of the people that have influenced my life, all of whom have impacted me in significantly different ways. However, I won’t bore you with the stories of late night car washes using warm bath water with my dad, or the trip with Pastor Troy to get cap guns and Screaming Yellow Zonkers. The truth is, as amazing as all these people are, they fail in comparison to the example we have in Jesus. 

Think of a compass…it’s purpose is to point to True North. When you're out in the woods and in unfamiliar territory, it's so easy to get lost, confused, or disoriented. When a hike takes you to an unexpected place, a compass is the tool you need to help you get back on track. A compass is helpful because, no matter how lost you feel, your compass always points to true north. It stays steady. It gives you a point of reference. It's trustworthy. 

Jesus is our True North. No matter who fails us, He will never fail! When we feel lost we can trust Him. Maybe you feel lost right now. If you are physically lost…get a compass, or at least close this email and use your smartphone—there’s a compass on there. But, if you feel spiritually lost, look to Jesus. Take heart in the words of the Psalmist:

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 

He makes me lie down in green pastures. 

He leads me beside still waters. 

He restores my soul. 

He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, 

I will fear no evil, for you are with me; 

your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; 

you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, 

and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. 

Psalm 23:1–6.

David knew all about unexpected and difficult changes, but He still wrote this psalm. He describes God as being our shepherd. He leads us. He stays with us. He comforts us. His goodness and His love follow us wherever we go. God is always there…look to Him!
